Datura Meteloides....AKA "Evening Fragrance"...

Due to my lack of photo taking lately...

I am falling back on last year...

I enjoy featuring some of my favorite plants...

Let's you all get to know me better...

And I get to "show off" some of my better performers...

The Datura is the most gorgeous plant...

From it's velvetey leaves...

To it's glorious White scented blooms...

To the tiny prickly ball of seeds produced after each flower...

They will dry...

And drop their seeds right into the pot, or the ground...

They are best left to over-winter, as they seem to need the frost to make them propagate...

They are late afternoon/overnite bloomers...

Sooooo...

You have to be alert to their progress..

Or...

You will miss the whole darn show!!

This stage can be anywhere from 2-3 days before the actual bloom...

So, when I see these on a Friday...[sorry for the blurry image]

I know I will miss the bloom!!

Oonce it reaches this stage...

You are assured of a bloom...

That evening...

Stick around...

The show has just begun!!!

If anyone ever offers you some Datura seeds...

Take them......with open arms!!!

Hope you all had a great day...

We decided to stay home tonight, and leave for the cottage in the am...

Pretty chilly...and would be chilly there...

On the menu tonight...

        Seared Scallops as an appetizer...

Mussels for my boyfriend, with onion bread...

                Pizza for me....YAY!!!

Greek Salad for both of us!!!

Enjoy your weekend...

Be back with photos of what's "up" in the cottage garden...

                         Cheers!  :o)

  2. That datura is very dramatic, isn't it? I love it!
It's chilly here, too! Feels like fall! haha.
Hope you enjoy the cottage this weekend!

  3. WOW! That's really cool. I haven't seen those before. You have so many exotic plants I've never seen anywhere else! I do have hibiscus plants and they are pretty dramatic but these take the cake!

  4. I've grown datura for a long time, but did give them up once the grandkids came along. Diid you know that seeds are frequently used for drug purposes and can be poisonous? Mind you many other plants are poisonous too so it is just a matter of being extra careful.
Sure hope it warmed up for you at the cottage. We have another chilly morning on the soccer field with grandson.

  5. is that what is sometimes called a moonflower vine? they open at dusk and stay open through the night... and close in the heat of the day? i had that once. but datura may be totally different. although the bloom is similar to my moonflower.
come to think of it i don't remember the seedy pod thingy on my moonflower vine.
    your botanical knowledge is wonderful.
and your photography just takes ones breath away. i always love them captured with dew drops or rain drops on them. glistening. i can almost feel the freshness. xo

  6. It's a very beautiful plant, but, it's poisonous I have been told. It's ok if you have no animals or small children. Just thought you should know.

  7. Be ever vigilant with Little Miss Vivian around this plant. Not to be ingested for sure! Since she's getting more mobile it could be very attractive! :)

  9. Hi Linda, thanks for the lovely comment you left on my blog, how nice to find your yours. That datura is a seriously stunning plant. I've never heard of them before and I do wonder if I could grow them here in the UK in our cooler climate. But goodness, what a gorgeous and dramatic flower. x
