Time For Some Orange

Here in Mississauga, we are supposed to get "some"snow tomorrow....perhaps a "skiff'".
So I propose that we all look at something ORANGE....something like sherbet....something like orange marmalade....something like....I know...FLOWERS!  What else would you expect from me. This blog is certainly turning into a tribute to what I truly love....FLOWERS!!

Tiger Lilies
Double Daylilies

Black-Eyed Susans

Marigolds

Begonia

Marigolds

Love the "susans"....I know, they aren't really orange, but close enough

Zuccinni and blossom

Orange sunset qualifies....no?

These are not orange....but I just had to put them in....ahhhhhhh for the good old summer days of flip-flops...seems like a long time ago..that reminds me.....I need a pedicure for  Christmas!!

Hope we don't get too much snow....want to finish my shopping first!!

:o)

Closing The cottage

Yesterday, was the day that we shut the cottage for 2011. It is always a sad day, as we miss going so much. As we had done most of the work, the last few weeks, the major thing is that Greg shuts the water off. That is when YOU really know, the season is over. Because the climate on Lake Erie is quite balmy, we are lucky enough to have the water on this late in the year. I know that people up North...Muskoka etc. usually shut their water shortly after Labor Day, or perhaps stretch it to Thanksgiving.

When I first stepped out of the car in the driveway, I noticed something growing on top of our mulch pile, from tree trimmings done last spring. On closer inspection, it was a mass of mushrooms...cool!

As I made my way along, I spied a lot of perennials still green, and looking ready to put out buds. These holly hock are ready for next spring.

These Woodland Geraniums stay evergreen, and leaves are a lovely shade of rust.

My perennial Yucca is also an evergreen. My Sister tells me, that when the leaves look "hairy" in the fall, that means flowers next summer. I have waited a couple of years between blooms, and they are spectacular.

The Pachysandra ground cover also is an evergreen...tiny white flowerettes in the Spring.

The beach was exceptionally calm...no wind, and a few things had washed up....

Like this pine cone...so black, from being soaking wet
And I even found a piece of sea glass....never before in December!
The deck looked kinda lonely....but peaceful at the same time.

Forget-Me-Nots...another evergreen
The seed pods of the Rose of Sharon

One of my Miscanthus is still green
As well as the perennial Lavender my daughter gave me...still smells wonderful

More Forget-Me-Nots, some woodland geranium peeking through the leaves, and some Euphorbia
Tiny succulents still putting out leaves
Close-up of the Euphorbia...has a lovely lime-green bloom in the spring

Zoomed in for a shot of our neighbour, Bradley, 3 houses down...has a fire no matter what!! He is one of many permanent residents on our stretch of Lake Erie

The perennial Oat Grass looks great all winter
The car is packed with a few odds and sods

The 2 Happy Owners are ready to leave. Greg has successfully drained the lines and put anti-freeze in the toilet and down the drains.

And I am trying to put on a brave face.....as I will miss staying here again, until next year. Don't get me wrong....we visit at least 3 times a month, but there is no substitute for the feeling of unpacking your bag..loading up the fridge with fresh groceries....clean sheets on the
bed....checking out everything new and abloom in the gardens......getting the lawn chairs out,  and lounging on the deck, to watch life go by.

:o)   Does it get any better than that?

Cheers to my friends!

Last Week At My Daughter and Son-In-Laws

Last week, you may remember I was feeding the 3 cats for 5 days. When you first approach Lissa's house, the first thing you see, are her Fall Cabbages...still glorious and pink. They jump right out at you....so beautiful.

Also in her front garden, is perennial Holly bush. Traditionally associated with Christmas, there are over 400 species. They sport very glossy green leaves, and bright red berries. Also known as "Drupes"...they are very important for birds and wildlife.

Then I spotted something, that I knew I had seen before, but couldn't put my finger on the name...I thought and thought, and finally came up with it!  HELEBORES!!!

They are also referred to as "Christmas Rose" or "Lentin Rose". They are the stars of a late winter/early spring gardens. They are deep rooted, stout plants. Their large leaves persist thru winter, but not  all are evergreen in all climates.
They divide very easily (hoping to get some!), and should be done in late spring or early autumn.
They self seed easily, and are very easy to grow. They have pale yellow/green bunches of 6 or more buds.  When I asked Lissa about them, she said that her neighbour's son had given it to her last summer. She was very surprised to see it blooming when she got home from Florida.

This is the view from her back door. They have an amazing garden...full of everything you can think of....she has so many Hostas, she insisted I take some!  I love Hostas, so I was happy to oblige.

Her 2 ferns from her front porch, are still going strong. She has moved them to the back deck, as she has no room for them! I brought my 1 fern in, and have it upstairs...we will see what it looks like come spring.
Their back shed is adorable....she painted it this summer, used to be just brown wood! I think she did an awesome job! The tree beside the shed is a "Curly Willow"
So........before I left on the last day of cat sitting......I helped myself to a beautiful bag of green lush Holly........payment for a job well done!!!

Stay tuned for the Christmas Tree and outdoor pots!!

Hope you all had a nice day.......gloomy as it was!

What A Day!!!!

This morning, My son Ryan, and his gal Anna, picked me up to visit the decor centre, to finalize some of his details for his new home that he has purchased.

Off we went....coffees in hand, for the drive to Ancaster. Afterwards, we were to go to my daughter Lissa's, in Burlington, to feed her 3 cats, as she and her husband Jeff are away in Marco Island. My husband and I had already been on Monday and Tuesday, but didn't go yesterday, as we had some appointments. So I knew they would be hungry, and the litter would be full!!

We arrived in Burlington around 3:30pm....when I tried to unlock the door, the key  turned, but the handle would not open the door!  I am like "what the hell"..."everything was fine on Tuesday".... Ryan took over, and tried everything....we even got a rock out of the garden, and tried to bang the handle down....what to do....I know...we'll call a locksmith!

Ryan had his handy dandy Iphone.. and within seconds he had located a locksmith right around the  corner. It was "Ed's Key and Lock Service"...Ryan said he sounded old, and he would be over ASAP!!

We got back into the car, as it was kinda chilly...I am sure the cats were on the other side of the door, thinking....where is the food!!! ????

Within 10 minutes...good old Ed rolled in....what a jolly happy soul he was!! He tried the key....listened closely...and went back to his van for an important tool.......a long piece of plastic!!!! Which he slid in and wiggled until he pushed the lock back...and just like that we were inside!!!

The cats were in side waiting...scared to death!!! We immediately fed them.

Ed continued to work on the handle....apparently when my son-in-law put a new handset on, he used the cartridge from the old handle...and it was only a matter of time that it would not work properly....of course it had to be today!!!

The whole thing took about 20 minutes...he put the handle back on...just for looks, and the key still opens the lock...at least Ed was a pleasant person, he is retiring December 22nd, and taking a cruise to Brazil....charged me $60...not too bad at all!!!

You never know what the day will bring...Greg and I are heading back there tomorrow, and Lissa will be home tomorrow evening late......

                                  WHAT A DAY!!!!!
