Yikes!!!!.....Yucca Spikes.....Yahoo!!!

Noticed these on the weekend...

I have 5 Yucca plants at the cottage...

Last year I had some beautiful blooms on 1....

And...

I...

Can't believe it...

But ALL 5 have flower spikes on them!!!

If you scroll down...

You will see what the flower spikes look like....

For some reason...

I could not find my photos from last year...

This particular photo { of the white flower spikes} is perhaps 6 years old...

They really are a spectacular plant!!!

And they stay green all Winter...another bonus...

And....

They look like Asparagus!!!.....mmmmm...asparagus....

Only much fatter!!!

Does anyone grow Yuccas???

Do you have success with the blooming???

  1. I have yuccas! Mine are a different species, maybe it's a climatic difference. Mine have bright reddish-pink shoots and flowers and they aren't as tightly closed as yours, less like asparagus. I think we have four of them but only one flowered this year; we had a cold spring and I think they may have gotten freeze damage. Yours look really healthy and hardy!

  2. I grew yuccas at our last house. They were in a dry river bed that I made.
    Faced the East.

    2. what's even more interesting is that even though we're across the ocean ( I'm in central Europe) I've noticed that we share more or less the same flowers and plants in our European and your American gardens, even the small plants :)

  4. I don't see Yucca plants in our area here but they could be. The blooms are really pretty. We had a wicked wild thunderstorm come through here at suppertime. And it's thundering again. And it looks like a rainy long weekend for us too. :(

  6. I added 3 yucca plants to the garden last year at the end of summer. All 3 survived the winter and have been sending up the leaves, in fact there are about 3 extra set of leaves growing. I haven't seen any flower spikes on mine but I'm not expecting any this year. I know they have gorgeous flower spikes on the plants, can't wait to see yours in bloom.

    1. I remember you saying that...if they get "hairy" along the spikes, you will get blooms...watch for the "hairs" this winter...Good luck!

    2. I'll be keeping eyes on them ... hairy is good for yuccas, not for legs and armpits on people :)

  8. On my home yesterday I told my daughter that a neighbor was growing "giant asparagus". Now I know what they really are! How funny.

Today I am happy to be living near the lake. The back porch has been wonderful. Still looking for the rain walk. Maybe soon, but so far I've missed all the rainstorms.
