Young Male Cardinal....
The other night...
We noticed a lot of commotion in the back yard...
We couldn't believe our eyes!!
I have seen Robins do this...as you can see in my header...
But never a Cardinal!!
I have a lot of mirrors in my gardens...
This one was at ground level...
Poor young Mr Cardinal, must have thought it was another Male...
And this being "that" time of year...
Decided he would have none of that!!
These were taken from inside...the mirrors have all their winter dirt still on them..
He was jumping...pecking at the mirror...those shots are all blurry!!
I took a few more...love the way his tail is splayed out in the one...
We put him out of his misery...
Went out and covered the mirror...
He came back a few times...but he was satisfied...
He had chased that other Male away...hahaha!
Hope you all had a great day...
Rainy here...and actually kind of cold!
Tomorrow more of the same...:o(
Enjoy your evening...
I am catching up on the old episodes of "Call The Midwife"...
New Season starting soon...where the heck is Doc Martin??
What were you up to today...anything exciting?? DO tell....
Cheers! :o)

Rainy and cold here too!
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen many cardinals this year more blue jays!
And have not seen any Jays !
DeleteWe had a male cardinal at the dining room window a few years ago and then a chickadee at the garage door window. Like you said, they think it is competition. I think that's a female just getting her summer colours.
ReplyDeleteI googled it Linda, 'cause I thought it was strange for a female to act like that.....
DeleteThe pics of young Males had these colourings...so I went with that....
I stand to be corrected...
I didn't think females did that either, but it sure looks like one. But who are we to argue with Google :)
DeleteI checked again....I was skepticle.....now you have me doubting myself!
Delete"Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is the dandiest Cardinal of them all?"
ReplyDelete"Get lost buddy , , , scram!"
Love all those lovely birds you have ~ Cardinals and Jays . . . :)
Funny story at my place . . . :)
Hi Eddie....
DeleteWish I had more Jays.....
Hopefully at the cottage....if we EVER get it opened for the season!
I must put some seed this Friday when we drive out....
Could not get the shed door open, there was so much snow!
I guess I should take some seed with me! Brilliant!
Would male Jays fight others in a mirror or are they more intelligent and just stand there an admire their masculinity , , , lol
DeleteNot sure....male and female Jays have the exact same colouring....all blue!
DeleteJust their song is a bit different....
Right Jane?
I'm not sure if they do sound different (to us)..they have a wide 'vocal range' and can mimic very well (typical corvid). Listening to male bird song is how babies learn their song...so I wonder when the girls learn their own variations?
DeleteJane x
On girls night out?? hahaha!
DeleteHehehehehehe!
DeleteJane x
:o)
DeleteMy friend used to have cardinals attacking her car mirrors...beautiful birds...but a bit lacking in the IQ department,I think!
ReplyDeleteJane x
Failed the Mensa test, Jane , , , lol
DeleteExcuse me Eddie.....shift over while I answer Janes comment.....hahaha!
DeleteYes....they do that at the cottage Jane....and the wheel rims too!
Any kind of reflection.....:o)
We say "budge up" here . . . lol . .
DeleteOk.....budge up Eddie! Hahaha!
DeleteHow is your leg?
Not that good at the moment . . . it is going to be a long haul I can see . .
Deletebut at least I am having regular treatment . . . really hurts sometimes . . . . :)
Ouch!
DeleteOh these are sweet photos. Love them. Do you ever worry about sunlight reflecting off the mirrors and onto something flammable? Today I watched the snow melt. LOL It was sunny and +5 so a lovely day. Rain tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteNo....never! Should I be worried? Yikes!
DeleteGlad you are finally melting....
We have rain....
Looks like a female to me and I don't think there are any young birds around right now. We've had young cardinals in our yard before and they look like adults as far as the coloring. At least that's how it is in Ohio! ha.
ReplyDeleteI guess I meant like a teenage bird....
DeleteI do know it takes them a couple of years to become adults...
We see this behaviour with the Purple Martins at the cottage....
The jury is out! Hahaha!
Sorry about the rainy and cold forecast! Warming up here, tomorrow will be 80 F., then dropping down, just in time for us to return home. Cute cardinals, you always give me a giggle with your funny escapades! We've been walking, exploring, enjoying the lovely azaleas and architecture. Take care and remember your umbrella, LSK! :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the heat! And the beautiful foliage! Dull and damp here!
DeleteSee you soon....
What a neat idea, having mirrors in the garden. I was tricked too - I thought there was a pair of cardinals there at first. Funny how they try to chase off another bird. I wonder if this year will be my See a Cardinal year?
ReplyDeleteAsk your daughter to get a feeder out now....black oil su glower seeds....or peanuts in the shell tossed to them...
DeleteThey will come for sure!
So cute!
ReplyDeleteWe cannot wait for CTM..and I agree ..where is Martin?
I adore Doc Martin!!!
DeleteI hope he cheers up a bit! Hahaha!
Oh...how funny...those randy little birds. I had two cockatiels years ago. My daughter came to me and said they were acting "funny". Sure enough, we had four little feathered baby critters a few weeks after. And this is a very consolidated version of the story.
ReplyDeleteNo rain here but thunderstorms were predicted last night. Just absolutely no sun. I've never seen a winter with so little sun. Incredible.
Jane xx
Ha! Too funny....aren't birds the best?
DeleteRainy here again....blech!
Poor fellow! Went shopping and to lunch with me Mum
ReplyDeleteXO Kris
Oh...now, that is a special day! Lucky you!
DeleteLooks like a female to me too in terms of colouring, but I'm so glad you covered the mirror. They can peck away for hours and eventually hurt themselves. I was working on a few freelance projects today and then, at the last minute, was invited next door for nachos. Yum! Then I was reading for a while up in our common room in front of the fire. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteA nice busy day for you! Fantastic!
DeleteHave a really big box of tissue to hand when you watch the new series of call the midwife, it is an excellent series, but a real tearjerker!! xx
ReplyDeleteI cried like a baby the other night....I love that show!
DeleteHa! So nice of y'all to "help" him run off that other male intruder! hehee. I haven't seen the "call the midwife" series. We just started House of Cards... darkly interesting and a little depressing about how things might really happen in Washington. ;) blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteWe are on Season 3 .....Francis just gets nastier! Enjoy!
DeleteWe've been watching that series as well, I have only had one Cardinal come to our feeder in all my life, we are just a wee bit too far North,,, they are so beautiful, its so funny how competitive those little guys are, all for the love of the ladies,
ReplyDeleteyes..and Cardinals mate for life!!♥️
DeleteTheir little beaks are so cute!
ReplyDeleteI think they turn black when they mature...
DeleteRainy and cold here as well. Spring, sheesh. We don't have cardinals here, boo hoo. I LOVE them and their song!
ReplyDeleteYes...where is SPring???
DeleteDragging her heels somewhere...
Sad that you don't have Cardinals...I wonder why??
Good thing I'm Batman.
ReplyDeleteHi Blue...
ReplyDeleteIs your sidekick Robin?
