Windy...Cold...Dark...Damp...Friday The 13th At The Cottage...

You may all remember, last Thursday the winds were incredible!!
Well...near the cottage...on Lake Erie...they were gusting to 130km/hr!!!
That is just craziness!!
My neighbour..who lives year round..sent me a photo on Thursday evening...she said it was unbelieveable!

When we arrived on Friday, and turned the corner, this is how the lake and sky looked!!
The water was brown!! I guess from all the churning... we were so pleased when we pulled into the see the "old girl" was still standing...and looking rather proud of herself for weathering another storm!! After all...she started out in 1931...built on the beach!! the early 50's, when Hurricane Hazel blew thru, she was moved back on the 1 acre property, and placed onto a concrete basement...Oh the tales she could tell!! the owners that we bought her from, were the daughter and son-in-law of the original owners...the daughter...Elaine, who was in her late 70's when we bought, and her husband Sheridan...have since passed are really only the 2nd family to live there! Very cool!

Here is my boyfriend walking down the walkway, to inspect the beach...
What a mess!!
I think we got every twig, log, tree branch for miles around...ON OUR BEACH!!

Plenty of firewood!!
Wonder how long it will be there!!
Hopefully some big waves will take it back to where it came from!!

The big rock I usually stand GONE!!
This rock is in our firepit...
The firepit is usually safe from the waves...
It must have been a sight to see...for sure!!

Even the beach deck had stones tossed onto it...

One very pleasant surprise...
The new winter shutters are on!!
Don't they look snappy...handles and all!!
And a view on the inside!!
Very pleased with these...the old ones were in really bad shape...
Last year when we put the old ones up...they had black mold on them...
Out they went...
These are beautiful!!

We had come prepared to stay overnight...
When the sun came out...we thought..hey...perhaps we can stay after all!!
Within 10 minutes or so...the clouds darkened...
And we could see water spouts across the lake...

Possibly rain showers...and the wind would pick up...and it was darn COLD!!!

We got back in the truck, and headed home :o(
Oh well...
Perhaps next weekend..altho...the forecast is cold!!

Hope you all had a great weekend...

And are having a great day!!

It was really nice yesterday...and today...lots of sunshine...14*c!!

Got some more leaves cleaned up in the backyard...

Had the whole family here yesterday for my boyfriends birthday party!!

Thanks for all your good wishes...much appreciated!!

Enjoy the rest of your day...

              Cheers!  :o)

  1. Brr! That first photo says it all, doesn't it? Makes me feel chilly just to look at it!
Can't believe your standing rock is gone! Crazy!

    1. Yes...brr is right!
It wasn't cold temps wise, but the wind was murder!
      I will find another! Hahaha!

  2. My goodness it is amazing to think of where all that debris comes from isn't it! The weather certainly must have been wild. I expect that you were right to go home and be safe and warm! xx

    1. Yes.....where? Probable from other fire pits I guess!
Yes....we were right to go home....but I missed being there!

  3. Glad the cottage held up well in the high winds , Yup lake Erie can be quite nasty in the winds . This past weekend the weather was wonderful and even today was lovely I was outside enjoying it puttering about . Lovely photos , Thanks for sharing , Have a good evening !

    1. Once again....the old girl survives!
      I was outside too!
      Rain Wednesday.....

  4. Wow, wow, wow. What photos. That water, crash. And of course, your feet :-)

    1. Hahaha! Hi Ivy! feet always make it in the post!

    2. Mine used to all the time, but then I started drawing stick people. But that's the fun of a blog.

    3. Absolutely!
Did you put photos in the beginning?

  5. what amazing pics Linda!! Really winter!! :))

    1. Hi Gloria!
      Not Winter yet.....still Fall!
      The winds were crazy!

  6. Well "shiver me timbers" what a powerful storm and such strength to toss that big rock like that.
Very interesting history of the cottage.

I bet your neighbours were concerned they might get blown away like Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz.

Good job you have the winter shutters on.

Are you still planning to go to the cottage at weekends during the winter? . . . :)

    1. Hi Eddie...
These pica are not even the worst of the wind!
I am glad the shutters are up...we like to put our outdoor stuff in there!
We go for visits all winter, but just too darn cold upstairs where we sleep!
The furnace and fireplace keep us toasty downstairs, but with no insulation, or attic, the heat just goes out thru the roof!
It is what it is....and we love it!
Water is still on...perhaps another sleepover, before we close...

  7. Wow...the water really is brown.:( But, nice to see the old cottage being cared for so well and getting it's 'winter coat' on.
You and your cute shoes. lol

    1. Hi Deb!
It is hard not to love her!
Only a few shoes...but I "baby" they last!

  8. Wow! That's some angry looking water. Glad your cottage fared well. Looks like you have quite a bit of driftwood.... You can craft a lot of things from that.

    1. Hahaha!
Boyfriend picked out a few nice pieces...and...I found a staircase spindle!

    2. I think I saw the staircase spindle....I thought it was a duck call at first. Lol!!

    3. Good eye Laurie!
This was the 2nd one to wash up!
We are hoping the rest of it goes away! But....probably not!
Some of our firewood is there...we will stack that next week...
Looks like you are enjoying your Lake!

  9. After high winds..our home gets a lot of branches and such too..glad she's ok:) Every fall we put storm blinders:) too..on our breezeway that is a screened in porch..between the garage and's a job..I like them off first sign of Spring..

    great job on yours!
And I love the striped socks.

    1. Oh yes...a big job for us too! Lifting them into place is the hardest!
I make my boyfriend stand inside the porch, as he used to squash all my plants around the porch!
      Oh my...I am bad,eh?
      Like my socks? too :o)
I have some polks dots too!
      Nothing plain about me....

  10. Looks like you had an entire shipwreck on the beach!
What a story you could tell.

    1. Ha! You are so funny Martha....yes...I have a million stories!
Someday we will sit and tell each other stories!
      Next summer!

    2. Yes, if I can wait that long.

    3. With your hectic will be here before we know it!!

  11. Wow - love the shots of the wild waves and sky. Beauty even in destruction.
Your new shutters look wonderful. Will keep the "ol' girl, " as you call her, very cosy!
Last few days have been beautiful with the sun.

    1. has been nice, not so much! and of course I have a few errands to run!!

    2. Bit more sun this afternoon...but...downright chilly!!

  12. Hey Girlfriend. Wow, what a wind storm and great pictures. Are those another pair of cute shoes I see on you feet? Where do you find such darling ones?
I've really missed being out of blog land for a while.
Hope you have a great week. So far today was very relaxing and I appreciated it. We did have some big winds here at the Villa, and one limb on a tree by the playground fell.
Our cars were just covered with leaves and dirt....but my dearest took mine to the car wash so I wouldn't be embarrassed to drive it to Bible Study tomorrow morning. HaHa. Sending love and Hugs.

    1. Hi Wanda...
These were from Walmart...about 3 years ago!!
When I see something Iike...I grab them!
      Have a great week!!

  13. Ha, I have some stripe sox just like those :)
What a storm you had. I never imagined your lake could look so wild and windy, not to mention dangerous! Good move to go home before it whipped up again. But what great pictures you take, so dramatic. And Happy Birthday to your boyfriend!

    1. It is one of The 5 Great Lakes, Patricia...not a small lake like you visited when you were here..
Love the socks!! why wear plain??

  14. Replies
    1. Shhhhh...I don't want the "old girl" to hear you...she has been thru soooo much!

  15. Wow, I had no idea that such a powerful storm was so close by! Very interesting about the house and being moved back an entire acre. One would think it would have been knocked down and built from scratch again. Crazy!

    1. HI Jaclyn...
I guess at that point, the cottage was only 20 years they just moved it back did a lot of cottagers...
Sure wish I had a few pictures from those days!!

  16. That looks really wild there Linda! Kind of fun to see the churning waves and brooding skies but it would have been a bit scary to be there during those high winds. Your new shutters are great! You should paint some pretty things on the inside to look at. :)

    1. Hahaha! There is still one more shutter, and then it will be dark in there.....:o(
