A few weeks back...I noticed this at my favorite market...
It is a Hydroponic Boston Leaf Lettuce...
This type of lettuce is my very favorite for sandwiches...
And Burgers...
But I always find them kinda pricey...
And they go mushy before I use it all up...
SO...for $2.50...which is cheaper than a cut one...
I thought I would give it a try!
It comes in a floral oasis...you know, those spongy things...
For making floral arrangements...
The Oasis is wrapped on the sides with a heavy plastic...
Top and Bottom are open...
Merely put it into a container...I chose this pedestal one...
Keep the Oasis damp...
Peel the lettuce leaves from the bottom...
And it continues to grow!
It doesn't need to be refrigerated...Mine is on the counter...
This has lasted 2 weeks already! Pretty good,eh?
I think when it starts to look kinda sad...
I will simply peel off the remaining leaves...and refrigerate!
And...probably make some egg salad sandwiches...
Or some Tuna salad sandwiches...
With lots of crispy Boston lettuce!
Oh yeah...and Avacado....Yummy!
If you see one...give it a go!
Well worth the time and effort....
And....most importantly...it is...
GREEN!
Very cold and blustery here...in the minuses with the windchill...brrr!
Buffalo NY is getting clobbered with lake effect snow...
From my very favorite lake...Lake Erie♥️
Just south of the dear old cottage...but supposed to shift northward this evening!
"Be nice to the old girl...old man winter!"
******************************
2 berry cakes in the oven...
Flakey Baked Filet of Sole...fried rice with mushrooms...fresh green beans...
How does that sound for dinner?
Oh...and a Greek salad before...gotta have that!!! With the Avacado...
Gosh...can you tell we like Avacados here? hahaha!
Too bad I can't grow them in my backyard...like my friend Kris in CA...♥️
What aromas are wafting from your kitchen???
Any decorating yet???
Enjoy the rest of your day...
Cheers! :o)

That is a great idea! I haven't seen these at the market, but I would definitely give it a go. All my houseplants are grown hydroponically (I've been doing this for years), so I'm already aware of this style and extremely comfortable with it! I hope to see more and more of this with plants.
ReplyDeleteIt is freezing cold here today! Winter is definitely coming.
Your dinner sounds delicious!
Hope you find one Martha....pretty good deal!
DeleteCold here too....
I have never had a lettuce like this or heard of them before either! We can get lettuces grown in a little pot of soil - rather like you buy pots of herbs - but I have never tried them. I tend to just get a bag of leaves as and when I want them and then we use them all up. It is good to know that these last well though, and if they ever come this way, I might give it a go! I hope that the cottage is OK. xx
ReplyDeleteTry it...you'll like it!
DeleteFingers crossed for the cottage.....
All my good gosh, that all sounds yummy. I also enjoy Boston lettuce.
ReplyDeleteWith regards to your question: I'm just a hot mess. Insert sad face here.
Less, hotter of a mess today though. In the movie room now, legs up, both pus snoozing and a nice big cuppa something warm.
DeleteNot all that bad, but I do wish to go out and play soon.
One day at a time Ivy....let yourself heal...
DeleteI've never saw that lettuce here yet, sounds like a wonderful idea to extend its life. your supper sounds wonderful, we're having left overs, scallop potatoes, roast chicken and carrots a, all let overs from the last few days, but I did make a bread pudding, not a complete bust!We are still under a blizzard watch (snow squall as the weather man says), 5th day!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE leftovers, Laurie!
ReplyDeleteI already planned tomorrow night...leftover peameal bacon....breakfast for dinner!
I see on the news all the lake effect snow....take care!
I love that lettuce and will look for one of those. It is soooooo green. We need that, right? I always feel hungry after visiting you, Linda. I am just back from the property and it's late so looks like a quick dinner tonight. Soup and a grilled cheese sounds about right. We were out for a big lunch today so a light dinner will do fine. It is so cold here today. The wind is nasty. Tomorrow the same. By Saturday it will be in the + again. :)) Stay cozy.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Goes a long way!
DeleteI love grilled cheese too! Hahaha!
I have never seen or heard of this lettuce looks and sounds YUMMY ! as does your cakes and super . Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteCakes done to perfection.....dinner was delish!
DeleteStay warm!
I love hidroponic lettuces, look beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteYes it does!
DeleteHow are you Gloria?
Those Canadians are brilliant! And resourceful to boot.

Cold, cold cold, here, but thankfully we are out of the reach of Lake Erie's nasty snowstorm. I hope folks west of here are staying warm and sheltered.
Yup....we sure are!
DeleteI have my feet up....crocheting by the fire♥️
I have my feet up and was doing some crocheting too.
DeleteMaking a simple blanket because I don't know how to do anything else.
What is wrong with a blanket?
DeleteI am making a toque for Miss V.....with a matching cowl.....very easy....you can do it! Come on....
There is nothing wrong with it... yet. Although I am wondering what's going on with a few of the edge stitches..
DeleteBlankets are nice, especially for sharing with grandchildren.
:0)
I sometimes have problems at the edges too...I either drop a stitch or add a stitch!
DeleteMost times my work is a bit "wavy" at the sides! hahaha!
Enjoy your day, Martha!
I will certainly look for one...a living lettuce head ...eat off of it and see a pretty houseplant at the same time...love it!
ReplyDeleteYou got it Betsy......functional and beautiful....oh....and delicious!
DeleteTrader Joe's has living butter lettuce. I love it. The way you have displayed it is great. BTW I finally found my flats today. Ended up with grey. Posted a picture tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteGood for you.....will check it out!
DeleteNo flats here....just BOOTS!
We are getting hammered by the snow and wind tonight...Tuscan beans and focaccia tonight.
ReplyDeleteJane x
Yes...my friend in Lakefield told me!
DeleteYour dinner sounds wonderful....
I'm thinking that I love reading your blogs because of the cozy warm feelings of food, home and family! Your dinner sounds very yummy. Love the green colours of your Boston lettuce. Dinner here was baked chicken breasts and roasted pepper squash brushed with a little olive oil, maple syrup and nutmeg. Missed you at coffee after South Common this morning, how's that for making you feel guilty? Sorry, couldn't resist. :) Looking forward to a warming trend in the weather by the weekend...
ReplyDeleteMiss Hester....you should write a food blog....you are always so detailed...I can see it!
DeleteI was toying with coming.....got some stuff done here...soon!
Yes....Buffalo will be flooded!
I wish I could find your lettuce here, delicious and looks lovely! And your cakes, dinner, heavenly. We ordered Chinese tonight, the hand is hurting now that the cast is off. I guess from moving it more.
ReplyDelete9 degrees here, ready to make a warm fire!
Jane xx
Oh dear...you are very brave Jane....
DeleteWe have a fire too!
AMAZING! haven't seen anything like that here.
ReplyDeletebut then...
YOU could grow anything. i'm surprised you don't have flowering rocks. LOLOL.
XO♥
Hahaha! You must have missed that post!
DeleteThanks Tammy♥️
What a cool idea for the lettuce! I haven't seen it here but really haven't looked. Will have to keep an eye out, for sure. Keep warm from the snow!
ReplyDeleteIt is quite a good bargain.....
DeleteStill nipply today, and snow expected!
Yum to avocados - I could eat them every day... sometimes I do! Bloody cold here. And the wind is fierce. Was out at a concert tonight and just about froze walking the last block home. Dinner was melted aged white cheddar on English muffins with tuna salad, baby carrots and cocktail tomatoes on the side.
ReplyDeleteOh me too!
DeleteYou sure have a busy social life Suzanne....and eat yummy meals!
Brrrrrr...
I like lettuce but doubt if I shall find that variety over here ~ looks very tasty . . :)
ReplyDeleteHi Eddie....
DeleteIt is...perhaps in the summertime......ahhhhhh....summer!
Enjoy your day....
Whenever I see the boys march out I wonder if they walk out of the house in the same order . . .
DeleteAlso the song from Snow White slightly modified springs to mind, "Hi Ho! Hi Ho! i's too the bus we go . . . :) Nice selection of photos . . . :)
Sorry ~ meant to say:
DeleteI shall look out for that variety and follow your recommendation . . . .
I must remember to proof read in future . . . . lol
I've heard that if you put a paper napkin in the bag with the lettuce it will hold on for a few more days longer :)
ReplyDeleteI have heard that works for peppers as well....keeps the mushy factor down!
